Well, we’re back in LA after a magical trip to Door County. It’s tough to return to the cement and this scrunched apartment with no view after spending ten days on a lake, waking up to long, lazy coffee hours with my mom. But – it’s a good place to focus on the work, and that’s what I’m doing.
After doggedly putting this movie together this spring, I’m finally working on the fine cut of the movie. Meaning: I’m finally on the fun part. The movie has a shape. The scenes feel good when I watch them overall. Now I’m tweaking the emotions ever so slightly. I’m shaving off unnecessary dialogue (and I’m afraid I might have to make some painful cuts soon…ugh…it’s all for the good of the whole, I swear).
One of my favorite parts about editing is learning how to extend moments when I need to draw attention to them. I’ve had some minor miracles, that probably no one will ever notice but me, where I add a look between two characters, just by extending the moment ever slightly beyond what happened in real time between the actors (weird, but I’m referring to myself as one of the actors..). I’ve also had other miracles, where I’ve used a laugh or a smile that’s not actually from a take, but from an actor getting ready for their take or after we “finished” filming.
(look! I found a frog while cleaning out our boat house! This has nothing to do with anything, I just really wanted to show you.)
And I’m finally adding some much needed B-roll, which we shot on this last trip. Meaning lots and lots of driving and filming. Filming the truck driving. Filming the opening credits. Driving up and down EE and Logerquist, searching for just the right light for our poster (!!!!).
It sounds like we’re on the home stretch, and I guess you could say we are in terms of picture lock, but there is so, so much more to do. I need to find a colorist and a sound editor soon. And we need music (pssst – send me some! I need upbeat pretty acoustic songs, some garage band-y songs…we can’t pay, but we can give a portion of the profits (ha) if we go anywhere).
But I really can’t complain. Because I’m finally really really excited again. I’ve been excited this whole time, mind you, but it was such a long, long grind putting this beast together, it felt like it would never end.
But, people. We have a movie here. We have – a movie.
(Can’t I just go back? Good books, iced coffee and a peach? Even if that is a ‘squito bite on my leg…. I want to go back to where the summer is golden.)
