I’m writing still. Writing writing writing. Some days there are big breakthroughs, other days it’s just tiny details. Sometimes I really hate the script and I’m pretty sure I’ve taken on too much in this story, and then other times I’m so excited I can’t stand it.
It’s a little exhausting and overdramatic over here, but we’re getting through.
Things I remember suddenly about writing June Falling Down that I’m experiencing again now:
-Those first 30 pages take foreverrrrrr to write – because I’m setting up all the pins to knock down. It’s continual backtracking at the moment. That’s okay, it makes the rest easier to write and structure. And it’s faster after this.
-There’s always a moment when the characters really start talking to each other – and that’s super exciting but can also be frustrating if they don’t have specific-enough voices yet. Again, backtracking to make the rest easier.
-Until you can really externally show a character’s inner state in some way to the audience, you’re just going to have a character walking around making random choices that only you can justify to yourself. Be able to show what’s going on. (Okay, some scripts you don’t need to do that and having a quiet, internal character just walking around works fine – see: every Sundance film – but that won’t work here) Film is different from life in that you have to pull out the drama of what’s inside a person and inject it into behavior.
-All the faults/criticisms of June are continually buzzing in my ear and I have to just swat at them and keep writing.
-There are more plot lines than I’ve ever dealt with before in this script and while it won’t seem like that much when the movie is done, it feels really clunky putting it all together right now. The goal is to make it feel seamless going between characters…and we are faaaaar from that right now. Yuck.
-This movie has a few similar themes to June and I’ve just accepted it. It’s just how life has progressed for me apparently. Everything is linked – but it all keeps blooming together and moving forward and deeper.
Watching lately (a lot I’m probably forgetting):
A Bigger Splash
All the President’s Men (timely…)
Other People (uh, why didn’t Molly Shannon get nominated for an Oscar??)
Netflix’s Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events (just the first episode but oh my how delightful)
