Howdy, howdy. Happy weekend to ya. Here’s what I’m into right now.
-Are you location scouting? These spots aren’t my style at all, but they’re still completely delightful. Oh, to act in a Wes Anderson film…
-I’ve had a lot of terrible heat headaches lately (I’m too Northern, I can’t take the heat spell we’ve been under out here) and I’ve had to lie down a lot and it’s easier sometimes for me to not watch narrative films so I’ve been watching documentaries and oh my goodness What Happened Miss Simone is unreal and Exit Through the Gift Shop is just fascinating. Everyone who likes documentaries is probably shaking their heads, duh. But I’ve never been a big watcher of documentaries and that needs to change.
-Oh man, that means I have to mention the series The Keepers. Holy goodness. It was…so much. I can’t begin to talk about how angry it made me. And how important it is that this was made. Don’t watch if you have sexual assault triggers (that’s not a spoiler, this thing is unreal). I vote for a true crime series where the two women leading the investigation dig into other cases. They’re the real super heroes. (ps – this series and the other docs are on Netflix)
-Follow-up thought: when I saw these women being featured in The Keepers I had such a pang in my heart. I was so, so happy to see them on screen. Both in their 60s (? I’m not good at ages), just a couple of regular ladies doing some sleuthing. It breaks my heart how rarely we see half of the world on screen. I could go on about women’s representation in film. But older women…I can’t even begin to imagine all the different stories of fascinating human beings that haven’t been told and have been overlooked. Well, get to work, Rebecca. Etc. Anyway, I LOVE these ladies.
-I’ve started reading this book and it’s quite, quite good.
-If you’re feeling down about your writing, so did Steinbeck. #metoo
-I woke up with this song in my head. I’m always into this song. It makes me cry. I always miss the Midwest. Unless I’m missing Italy. Or New Mexico. Aw hell, I still miss the Midwest all the time.
-Speaking of the Midwest, we’re bringing June Falling Down to Door County in less than a week. Thursday, June 29th at 8pm. If you’re going to be in the county that is 100% where you should be on that night. And then we’ll tell you where we’re going to get beers after. And you should come hang out. Because the people who made this movie are some of the greatest in the world (not talking about me and Chris…but we’re okay too).
